Promfest stands for 'Promethean Festival'. It is run by Opera Prometheus, a Sydney-based non profit chamber opera company. The festival was first conceived to be a joint collaboration of all Sydney opera companies in the spirit of friendship to celebrate the operatic arts in Australia.
It is also created as a forum to discuss about the place of opera in a contemporary Australian society and the future of opera in Australia and around the world.
Our theme for this year is 'Sydney in Love', as it holds very important meaning in 2011, socially and politically. What is Sydney's take on love? marriage equality? domestic violence? gender equality? money and property price? Weather? Promfest 2011 aims to become the opera festival that is relevant to today's Sydney and Australia.
In the premier of this mini festival, we will present you two different shows; three operas and one masque, involving five directors, four musicians and twelve singers. We aspire to involve more and more singers, musicians, directors and composers in the future and to reach even more audience all around Sydney and New South Wales.
